Big Season of Formula One Betting Begins

The long-awaited Formula One 2012 season is about to begin, as the world’s best drivers get ready to race each other this Sunday in the Qantas Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit.

Can Hamilton beat Vettel?

The big question on everyone’s lips this year is whether Lewis Hamilton can recovered from his disappointing 2011, in which he finished 165 points behind eventual winner Sebastien Vettel and 43 points behind British compatriot and Vodafone McLaren Mercedes teammate Jenson Button.

Hamilton’s struggles are once again being talked about as an extension of his private life, but nonetheless the online sportsbooks and punters seem to think he could be a bit more settled this season, and are predicting that he will really challenge Vettel for this year’s Drivers Championship.

Online Bookmakers’ Odds

All the big online sportsbooks are offering odds on individual races, the drivers championship and other options. William Hill Online, Sports Interaction, 888sports and bet365 are just a few of the internet betting agencies punters can look to for Formula One betting.

William Hill’s odds for the Drivers Championship are currently as follows: Vettel, 10/11, Hamilton, 6/1, Button, Fernando Alonso, 8/1, Mark Webber, 16/1, Kimi Raikkonen, 20/1, Nico Rosberg, 25/1, Michael Schumacher, 28/1, BAR, 100/1.

For the Australian Grand Prix, Vettel is 11/8, followed by Hamilton, 5/1, Button and hometown favourite Webber, 7/1, Alonso, 9/1, and Kimi Raikkonen, 18/1.

Amongst other specials, William Hill is also offering 10/1 odds that Hamilton will receive a drive-through penalty during the Australian GP, and has odds on a Hamilton/Button season match bet: Hamilton 4/6, leads Button, 11/10.

Hills is also offering bets on the Constructors Championship, how many pole positions each driver will achieve during the year, the winning nationality of drivers for the season and for individual races, fastest qualifier, and other combination wagers.
